  • The au pair is entitled to one-and-a-half day off every week. A half day off means that the au pair can complete chores of 3 to 5 hours either before or after 2 p.m. on the day in question

holidays


  • The au pair is entitled to a day off on official Danish national Holidays
  • The au pair must have a written agreement with the host family describing when a holiday is expected to be taken.

allowed work

 The au pair can assume a role as a member of the family. This means that the au pair should contribute to the household by carrying out chores related to the family's daily housekeeping, such as babysitting, cleaning and washing clothes.

forbidden work

The au pair may not take on responsibilities related to personal care or sick care of adult members of the host family.

pocket money

The host family must pay at least 4,250 DKK per month as pocket money. The money must be paid to on the Danish bank account of the au pair no later than the last banking day of each month.

board and lodging

The au pair receives free room and board. 

He or she has to be provided with free meals and an adequate room of his or her own in the house of the host family.

room

The au pair is entitled to his or her own bedroom in the family's home during the entire stay. In addition to his or her bedroom, the host family must also have a common living room, as well as one bedroom for every two people registered at the residence. If the host family’s building is occupied by several families, there may only be calculated two members of the same family per bedroom. Both the common living room and all bedrooms must be approved for living in and must be registered in the Housing Register BBR (Bygnings- og Boligsregistret)

language course

The au pair is allowed to study or take a training course for a limited period of time. The host family pays DKK 5070 (2016 level) to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration. This amount is to help finance part of the Danish state's expenses for free Danish language classes 

travel expenses

  • The host family must pay the au pair's trip to Denmark if the au pair lives in a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland. The duration and route of the trip must not be disproportionately inconvenient for the au pair.
  • The host family must pay the au pair's trip home when your au pair stay ends, if the au pair goes back home to the country of origin or previous country of residence.

health, accident and liability insurance

The host family must take out the following three insurances covering the au pair:

  1.  insurance against industrial injuries,
  2.  insurance against personal injury outside work, 
  3. and insurance covering transportation to your home country in the case of your death, serious illness or injury

social welfare system

In Denmark each person has a personal registration number, which is called a CPR number. CPR stands for Central Person Register. The CPR number is essential in relation to any contact with the Danish authorities and especially in connection to tax and social security issues.

One can contact the local municipality’s Citizen Service Centre or one of the four International Citizen Service Centers, available in the largest cities in Denmark: Aalborg, Aarhus, Copenhagen and Odense.

  • The host family must pay 5,275 DKK  to the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration. This amount is to help finance part of the Danish state's expenses for Danish language classes for the au pair..

ending of contract

Any termination of the au pair contract must be done in writing. The au pair can terminate the contract with two weeks' notice, and the host family can terminate the contract with one month's notice. If the au pair decides to stay with the host family during this period, the host family must continue to provide the au pair with food and lodging and pay the au pair's monthly allowance. If the au pair decides not to stay with the family during this period, the host family must continue to pay the au pair's monthly allowance.

Furthermore, both the au pair and host family have a right to terminate the contract with immediate effect in the case of serious violation of the contract by the other party, or if other serious circumstances warrant it.
