According to the official rules, an au pair can work:

• Maximum 8 hours/day
• Maximum 30 hours/week.

At least 2 days off per week.

The daily work of an au pair varies widely. It wholly depends on the type and lifestyle of the family that is hosting the au pair. In general, an au pair's everyday work includes:

• Carrying out light housework such as helping to keep the home clean and tidy as well as washing and ironing clothes;
• Making breakfast and simple meals;
• Looking after younger children, i.e. supervising them, accompanying them to kindergarten, to school or specific activities, bringing them for walks, playing with them;
• Watching over the house or apartment and looking after pets

The tasks of an au pair do not include caring for the sick or elderly (looking after family members in need of care).

ou will not be carrying out work for people who are in need of more specialised care. More specialised care means care duties that require specific skills.

The pocket money will amount to a minimum of € 300 to maximum of € 340 per month.

Board and lodging are provided by the family for free. This also applies in case of illness or during the au pair's holidays.

The au pair is entitled to his/her own room.

The au pair has the opportunity to take Dutch classes. The host family has to pay for a Dutch course for the au pair if he/she stays with the family for 6 months or more.

Depending on the agreement between the au pair and the host family, the travel costs will be either split between parties or paid in full by the host family or the au pair. This usually depends on the length of the au pair's stay.

While staying in the Netherlands, it is necessary to have health insurance with coverage for the Netherlands. This health insurance needs to cover at least the costs for hospitalization and care in a sanatorium or psychiatric hospital. If the applicant starts working in the Netherlands, he/she is obliged by law to take out Dutch healthcare insurance. In addition, it is recommended to take out supplementary insurance. The Dutch Insurance company will pay for part of the costs of the general practitioner, medicines and the hospital.

The host family must arrange and pay for a medical, accident and liability insurance for the au pair.

The au pair doesn't need to pay any social insurance fees.

If you start working in the Netherlands, you will become insured in the Netherlands against illness, maternity, disability, accidents at work and occupational illnesses and unemployment, and you will be covered by the schemes for old age pension (AOW), survivor benefit (Anw), and child benefit (AKW).

The au pair doesn't have to pay any taxes in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, people have to pay tax on their income. If the participant is employed, his/her employer will deduct an amount for this from his/her wage. The au pair should not pay more than EUR 34 in costs for the preparations for his/her stay in the Netherlands

The following costs are not taken into consideration for the amount of € 34:

• Travel expenses (costs for travelling to and from the Netherlands)
• Visa expenses (including related travel and accommodation expenses)
• Expenses for the application, translation and legalisation for a birth certificate
• Expenses for obtaining a travel document.

The host family, however, is charged by the agencies. Rates are different for each agency, approximately EUR 2.500.

You are not allowed to pay a sum of money as a security deposit (or bond) to a (Dutch or foreign) mediation agency or exchange organisation.

If the au pair has a complaint about his/her host family, the IND recommends that he/she must first try to resolve the issue with the host family. 

If that is unsuccessful, he/she can contact the au pair agency or cultural exchange organization. If the au pair agency or cultural exchange organization cannot or does not want to help resolve the issue, the au pair should call the information line. The telephone number is 31(0)6-10 82 35 94.
