New Zealand is the perfect place to bring up children: It is stable, peaceful and safer than just about anywhere else in the world – in fact New Zealand is the fourth safest country in the world, according to the 2015 Global Peace Index.

New Zealand has a very unique and dynamic culture. The culture of its indigenous Maori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of all New Zealanders. Their place in the South Pacific, and their love of the outdoors, sport, and the arts make New Zealanders and their culture unique in the world.

As of 2013, the resident population of New Zealand was over 4.4 million. The population is estimated to increase by one person every 7 minutes and 4 seconds. New Zealand has a low population density and spectacular scenery. As a result, many New Zealanders have a love of their landscape and the outdoors.

New Zealanders (also called Kiwis) are friendly, welcoming and enjoy meeting people from other cultures. The Māori, New Zealand's first settlers, make up around 14.6% of the population however there are many different ethnic communities living in New Zealand including European, Asian and Pacific Islanders.

typical day in a family

Hiking, mountaineering, and kayaking are enjoyed by many New Zealanders, while many more will explore their landscape with a trip to the beach or a bush walk.

The traditional Pākehā idea of the family is the nuclear family – mum, dad and their children. But there are many different kinds of families in New Zealand.

  • Māori whānau include people of several generations (e.g. grandparents, parents and children) who are related by descent or marriage. They may or may not live together in the same house but share a strong sense of connection.
  • Extended-family households may include several generations – children, parents and grandparents. These are more common among Māori, Pacific and Asian households.
  • Sole-parent families in the 2000's are usually the result of parents separating or children being born to mothers who live alone.
  • Families with lesbian or gay parents may have children from a previous relationship, or children conceived through donor sperm or with a surrogate mother.
  • In blended families adults and children who have been part of other families come together to form a new family, often after separation or divorce.

When parents split up, children often live part of the time with each parent, moving between different households and families.
